The world of product marking can generally be broken down into four different market segments; Identification, Variable Printing, Decorative and Graphic. Identification typically requires static alpha/numeric numbers. Variable printing adds sequential serial numbers, bar codes and personalization to the application. Decorative marking usually includes logos and CAD images, while Graphics deal with raster images (i.e. jpeg) and color. Each one of these market segments is than pushed by the production requirement in either the direction of speed versus quality. In the diagram below one can see how the various production tools stack up against the market and the production requirement. This does not take into account support, set up costs, material, environmental issues and consumables. The bottom line with all these marking tools is that they can be stretched and shoe horned into many applications that will either add labor cost and/or poor quality. In the ideal world all manufacturing environments should possess all the different marking techniques; however with budgets as they are, the one marking tool one should not be without is the galvo based laser marker.
